Whoever said you should stay indoors during the winter has clearly never seen a quad jump through a ring of fire, a snowmobile sludge through 2,000 miles of Alaskan wasteland, or a 100-foot death-defying snowmobile jump over Aspen.

For the rest of us, the winter months present opportunities to witness some of the most exciting events in extreme sports. So, if you are itching to get off the couch, below are some of our picks for the best extreme winter motorsports competitions in the country. Bundle up, because these events will bring you even more chills than the temperature outside.

X Games — Aspen, Colorado

January 24-27, 2019

X Games launched this power-packed sports and lifestyle event in 1995. Since then, it has become a top draw for extreme winter sports competitions, live shows, gaming, and culture-driven interactive festivals.

X Games features some of the world’s finest athletes descending atop Aspen, Colorado to compete for big titles and display mind-blowing acrobatics for spectators from all over the planet.

Iron Dog Race — Big Lake, Alaska

February 15-23, 2019

Originally known as the Iron Dog Gold Rush Classic, the first Iron Dog event started in 1984 in Big Lake, Alaska. This grueling off-road snowmobile competition covers 2,031 miles of remote, rugged Alaskan terrain combined with unforgiving weather conditions that include high winds, sub-zero temperatures, and miles upon miles of frozen snow.

It is both the world’s longest and toughest snowmobile race and requires critical survival skills and gritty determination from each team. Each team consists of two riders and two snowmobiles. Extreme sports enthusiasts can also participate in a non-competitive excursion that extends 1,100 miles on the historic Northern Route of the Iditarod Trail to Nome.

Snocross — Select Locations

Snocross is premier snowmobile racing at its best. It features many of the world’s top performers coming together to compete on challenging, professionally designed, graded tracks. Each event is held at a venue that tests each athlete’s endurance, skill, and determination as they race to the finish in a chill winter environment.

Snocross races feature high-flying dangerous acrobatics, impending obstacles, tight turns, speeds of up to 60 mph, and fierce competition from the top pros in motorsports. It's an excellent opportunity for fans to connect with the racers and for enthusiasts to bring their families.

World Championship Ice Racing — Select Locations

The World Championship Ice Racing Series offers multiple pro-level arena racing events throughout the country. These high-octane circular races feature a wide array of divisions such as motorcycles, three and four-wheel ATVs, X-Karts, mini-pit bikes, and drift trikes in all classes for youth and adults.

All races take place on hard, icy surfaces that are extremely difficult to navigate. The pro racing divisions showcase some of the most fearless and skilled racers in each division. Riders compete to see who will be crowned the next ICE World Champion. Spectators can also enjoy special events such as motorcycle on ICE Limbo, and stunt shows that include pyrotechnics and the infamous Ring of Firequad jumps.
