ROVs are full of adventure. They are perfect for transporting gear to a favorite campsite or exploring the great outdoors. They are intended primarily for recreational use. ROVs have also been used for farming and construction.
When it comes to safety, always fasten your seat belt and wear protective gear, including a helmet. Keep all parts of your body inside the ROV. Avoid paved surfaces because an ROV is designed to be an off highway vehicle. Drive at a safe speed and only in designated areas. Be careful turning and crossing slopes. Never drive or ride under the influence. You must be 16 or older and have a valid driver’s license to drive an ROV. Only carry the recommended number of passengers. Read and follow the operator’s manual and warning labels.
The ROV E-Course is a free, multi-media, interactive online safety course available 24/7 through the ROHVA (Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association). The E-Course is an important resource for the growing community of ROV enthusiasts and reinforces:
- Key risk factors associated with ROV operation
- Safe driving practices that will reduce risk of injury
- The best resources for learning about your particular vehicle
The safety course is two hours long. It helps develop safe driving habits but it will not teach you to drive. It's intention is to improve awareness about ROVs and inspire a safety-minded approach to off-road recreation. You can stop the course at any time, save your progress and pick up later where you left off. At the end of the course, you have the option of taking an ROV safety quiz to test what you have learned.
